BAHA
- TRAINING TODAY
LEADING BELIZE'S AGRICULTURE INTO THE FUTURE
An
extensive training programme to improve and upgrade the expertise
of its entire staff continues this month at the Belize Agricultural
Health Authority (BAHA).
Earlier
this year BAHA embarked upon the comprehensive training programme
designed to upgrade staffs' existing skills and knowledge.
The return for this investment in education is the provision
of optimum, competent and professional services in Food Safety,
Quarantine, Plant and Animal Health for the general public,
farmers, producers, exporters and importers as well as other
related organizations. To date the programme has facilitated
35 courses and workshops with significant benefits to over
400 participants.
Recent
highlights were the overseas training in Water Quality
and Residue Analysis Testing by personnel of the Food
Safety's Central Investigation Laboratory and a local workshop
on the Inspection and Identification of Pest and Weeds
of Quarantine Importance. A Plant Health Officer benefited
from a one-month internship in Costa Rica to strengthen his
knowledge in Integrated Pest Management, while the
Animal Health Department, together with industry, received
invaluable in-country training in the Identification and
Control of Poultry Diseases.
Training
for BAHA staff continues in October with courses in Bee
Diseases Recognition and Management; Dairy Herd Management;
Food Borne Disease Investigation and Surveillance; Quarantine
Fumigation Methods and Entomology. In the spirit
of full cooperation with other regulatory bodies as well as
the industries benefiting from BAHA's services, the Authority
invites participation in these training opportunities where
possible.
