The
Pink Hibiscus Mealybug (PHMB) was detected in Belize in 1999
in Belize City. However, due to an effective emergency plan
it was controlled within a couple of months. Since then, an
effective biological control programme has been established,
funded through the "International Regional Organization
for Agricultural Health" (OIRSA) and implemented by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority
(BAHA).
In
January 2003, a regional laboratory for the mass production
of the parasitoid Anagyrus kamali was inaugurated
in Belmopan. The lab produces parasitoids for Belize's needs
and is capable of producing for other countries of the region
if the need arises. Presently, the lab is producing approximately
40,000 parasitoids per month.
A
systematic surveillance programme is conducted monthly that
allows for the timely release of parasitoids for quick and
effective control whenever new sites are detected. Countrywide
study sites allow us to evaluate the percentage of control
being achieved. Control so far has been very successful.
